History University of Iowa

Picture this - way back on February 25, 1847, a mere 59 days after the bustling state of Iowa embraced the Union, a university took its first breath. The University of Iowa sprang to life in a quaint city aptly named Iowa City, and in its lifetime has amassed an impressive collection of firsts, in academia and beyond.

Iowan pioneers flocked to the university in 1855, marking the start of academic instruction within the grand walls of the Old Mechanics Building. Think of it - an initial intake of 124 students, a near-even mix of men and women, all eager for a slice of this new educational pie. By the following academic year, the University of Iowa was standing tall, boasting nine robust departments across various fields of study.

Who headed this burgeoning institution, you ask? The honor goes to Amos Dean, the university's very first president. Imagine his pride when in 1857, the Old Capitol Building, where the fifth Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa once convened, became the university's first permanent "home."

Interestingly, the University of Iowa has always been a trailblazer in inclusivity. As early as 1855, the university made headlines by admitting men and women on an equal basis, a first among public universities in the United States. Creative works in theater, writing, music, and art were no longer just pastimes, but stood shoulder to shoulder with academic research.

When it comes to law education, the university's pioneering spirit shines through even brighter. In 1873, it awarded a law degree to a woman, Mary B. Hickey Wilkinson - another first. Education transcended color lines when Alexander G. Clark Jr., an African American, donned his graduation cap in 1879. And yes, you guessed it, this was the first time an African American received a law degree. Frank Holbrook, another African American, experienced a breakthrough in 1895 as the first to sport a varsity athletic uniform.

Such progressive attitudes shone in the establishment of the first law school and dental school set west of the Mississippi River. And, it didn't stop there! Iowa was the first university to harness the power of radio and television in an educational setting. It stirred up standardized testing waters, and made headlines again by promoting an African American, Phillip Hubbard, to an administrative vice president position in 1966 - a first for the Big Ten institutions.

Now, here's something for the creatives among you. The University of Iowa, under Carl Seashore's leadership, began to accept creative projects as theses for advanced degrees in 1922. This historic ‘first’ sparked a shift in the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree. In 1936, the university-initiated an innovative discussion group for writers of poetry and fiction, later known as the celebrated Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Iowa has seen its fair share of sorrow. In 1991, a shooting on the campus claimed six lives, one of them the assailant’s, leaving a deep scar on the university's history. Then, disaster struck again, in 2008 when unexpected floodwaters from the Coralville Reservoir damaged more than 20 campus buildings. Despite those tragedies, the university rose from the ashes, rebuilt, and put measures in place to hopefully prevent future disasters - always looking ahead.

As recent as 2009, Iowa City earned a place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, touted as the world's third City of Literature. Again making waves in 2015, the Iowa Board of Regents took an unconventional pick for the president’s position. Business consultant Bruce Harreld, though lacking the usual academic administration experience, was seen as someone who could reinvent the financial structure of the university in a time of dwindling state support.

During its lifetime, the University of Iowa has proven its resilience time and time again, maintaining its pioneering spirit and setting the precedent for academic institutions worldwide. Despite its turbulent past, the university has consistently managed to flourish, carving out a unique space within the educational landscape of America. This might be the university's history in a nutshell, but it is merely the foundation upon which future chapters will be written. Will you be a part of the University of Iowa’s continuing story?
