To complete their medical studies to the full-fledged doctoral status, they needed to move out of state.
Fast forward to 1950, when the Oracle of the Mississippi Legislature breathed life into a budding dream. They passed a law leading to the creation of a four-year medical school that was to become a part of the prestigious University of Mississippi. The long-anticipated arrival of this dream institution came about on July 1, 1955. The state's spanking new Medical Center, or what's endearingly known among locals as UMC, opened in the city of Jackson. Yes, you heard it! With a bundle of enthusiastic medical and graduate students, interns, and residents, it was a sight to behold!
A year later in 1956, the nursing department from the Oxford campus moved into this flourishing medical center, receiving the status of a standalone school in 1958. The evolution didn't stop there - The School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) found its inception in 1971, offering full-fledged bachelor's curricula by 1973. The icing on the cake came with the School of Dentistry, whose doors were thrown open for its maiden batch of students in 1975. Most recently, in 2001, the graduate program achieved school status, shaping up as the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences.
Underneath the buzzing campus of UMC, lies a piece of forgotten history. Our story takes a eerie turn here, my intelligent reader! The land where UMC stands today was once home to the Mississippi Insane Asylum upto 1935. When the operations of the asylum moved to Whitfield, Mississippi, thousands of unmarked graves were left behind on the UMC campus.
Rewinding back to UMC's beginning in 1955, the institution maintained a tradition of treating African-American patients, an act of kindness cloaked under the segregation laws of the time. In 1963, Medgar Evers, a revered civil rights leader, took his last breath at UMC after a fatal shooting. UMC gained prominence as a medical provider for injured Freedom Riders the very next year.
Legislation changed the course of UMC's history in 1964. The Civil Rights Act, under Title VI, prohibited discrimination in federally funded institutions, prompting the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to issue a federal civil rights complaint against UMC in 1965. Amidst this, Robert Q. Marston, a respected MD and the Director of the Medical Center, drafted a compliance strategy leading to the hiring of the ground-breaking first black faculty member and integration of hospitals and clinics.
At the same time, Dr. Blair E. Batson, head of UMC's Pediatrics department, made history by offering a residency to Dr. Aaron Shirley, an African-American physician. His entry into the residency program in 1965 marked him as the first African-American learner at UMC. The following year, Sammie Long, became the first Black woman to enroll at the school. A few years later in 1972, the institution celebrated the achievement of James Oliver, who became the first Black M.D.-degree recipient.
Years later, our tale ends with a somber note as we reach June 2023. UMC had to close its LGBT health clinic due to political pressure.
