The founding pillars of Viterbo University were set down in the latter half of the 19th century, to be precise, in the year 1890. An institution of noble intentions, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, made its mark on the education landscape by setting up St. Rose Normal School. The underpinning aim? To shape religious sisters for elementary school teaching.
With the passage of time, the founders felt the need for a more expansive approach to education. So, in 1923, tailor-made college-level courses were launched, setting the building blocks for Viterbo to blossom and transform into a traditional four-year degree grantor. Fast forward about a decade, and Viterbo had seamlessly adapted and evolved into a four-year institution of higher education. Known as St. Rose Junior College by the time the 1931-32 school year rolled around, it was a fulcrum of zeal and hard work, authorized by a reputed name – the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Fast forward to 1939, and Viterbo got a feather on its cap! It received approval as a four-year institution, ensuring teachers were ready for primetime at elementary schools. Also? The birth of its new identity as Viterbo College, a name change that demonstrated the broader educational possibilities it offered. By 1940, the college hosted its debut commencement exercises, met with a stamp of certification from the State Department of Public Instruction.
As we journeyed through the '50s, Viterbo College ventured wider, enhancing its academic offerings in the liberal arts domain. 1952 brought another acclamation, with Viterbo gaining the accreditation of the University of Wisconsin Committee on College Accreditation. It stood proudly as a fully fledged four-year liberal arts college. 1954 saw another accreditation feather in the cap, this time from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
