History Pennsylvania College of Art and Design

Once upon a time, in the year 1982, there were five artists with a dream. David M. Levy, Patricia Wertz, Mary Colleen Heil, Heidi Leitzke, and Robert Andriulli had one simple aim - to create a haven of learning for artists - and thus, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCAD) was born. Now, imagine that! Five people gifting the world an institution that fuels the dreams of thousands of artists worldwide, including from India!

Leaving no stone unturned, they hit the ground running. For the first five years, the college functioned as an independent institution associated with Franklin & Marshall College. It was quite similar to your cousin's wedding where everyone is technically related, but you're still your own person. Not too tough to grasp, right?

In 1987, they decided to take things up a notch. In a little twist of events, PCAD became an independent, degree-granting four-year institution. You can compare this to stepping out and experiencing life for yourself, no more relying on the big brother.

A couple of years later, in a turn of events worthy of a Bollywood movie, they hit some rough patches. But, as with any good movie, they bounced right back in 1996, moved into a brand-new, renovated building in downtown Lancaster. These folks truly knew how to turn rags into riches!

Next, comes a game-changing incident. Spicing things up a bit, the college expanded. They bought an adjoining building in 2006. This was like adding ghee to your hot, steaming dal, making it simply irresistible! More space meant more students. It was a win-win.

Then in 2008, Stephen Perloff, founder of The Photo Review and The Photograph Collector, curated an exhibition. Stephen wasn't just somebody but a passionate guy whose dedication to photography matched the hotness of a spicy, Indian curry! This event changed the game for PCAD's photography department.

In 2011, another feather was added to PCAD's exciting cap! They established a scholarship fund in honor of Jeremy Waak - who had been an industrial design faculty member. Like a mother thrush feeds its little ones, PCAD cared for its every single member, don't you see?

Until now, things were going smoother than a buttered pan! But then, in 2016, the college hit another bump. They had to move their library, this time though because of a friendly merger with Millersville University. It somewhat felt like shifting to a new city, leaving behind old memories, but embracing growth.

Today, PCAD stands tall and happy, celebrating nearly four decades in the business of creativity and learning. It’s a living testament to resilience, to dreaming big, and to the power of art—quite similar to the Taj Mahal, isn't it? Its story is like a spicy, tangy Indian pickle – full of surprises, a little spicy, and loved by all!

Feeling inspired? So grab your brushes, pencils, or turn on your computer. Remember, when you join PCAD, you don't just take a step forward in arts education, you become a part of a fantastic ride! After all, isn't life all about chasing and living our dreams?
