Picture this- the story of Siena College began when a huge leap of faith was taken in the late 1930s. The then president of St. Bonaventure University in Western New York, Thomas Plassmann, decided to trailblaze a daring venture. He kindly nudged seven Franciscan friars, packing them off to New York's Capital Region which was about to become the birthplace of a satellite campus.
Now, imagine a family home with a rich aura, tucked away on the Garrett estate in Loudonville. This humble dwelling of bygone days bore witness to an extraordinary transformation as it was turned into classrooms, offices, and much-needed living space for the Franciscan Friars. You'd think this would probably cause mayhem, right? Wrong! It was an overriding success, so much so that twice the anticipated student count appeared on opening day!
Having such a turnout meant that the newly converted academic hub quickly run out of room. Classrooms overflowed and friars had to improvise, sometimes to the point of giving lessons in stairwells. Thanks to this unexpected deluge of students, it wasn't long before a new academic building came into existence to accommodate the swelling enrolment.
Enter the four-year-old Siena Hall, a juggernaut, brimming with classrooms, laboratories, faculty and administrative offices, a library, a bookstore, a cafeteria, and a chapel. Each year brought double the return than the last, with the student population exponentially ballooning. Right after the establishment of the gymnasium in 1941, the institute hosted its first graduation ceremony.
An interesting twist to the tale came in 1928–39 when the tradition of an all-male day school was shattered by introducing coeducational evening and summer courses. 1942 turned out to be a historic year when Siena received its permanent charter from the State of New York. The turbulence of World War II saw a drastic plunge in enrolment, threatening the very existence of the institution. But did it fold? No, it pushed back, more resilient than ever.
Despite the odds, it thrived and even expanded! In 1948, the enrolment soared to an all-time high of 2,752 students. This thriving atmosphere not only paved the way for a standalone library and friary with an amply capacious chapel but also led to adding a range of courses that culminated in master's degree programs.
Fast forward to Siena's third decade – three new dorm buildings and a dining facility graced the campus. This transition from a mere commuter-college to a bustling dorm-community was complemented by the doubling of the student count.
Faithful to the Franciscan tradition of valuing knowledge, a new science building named Roger Bacon was inaugurated in 1967. The year of 1968 marked another significant milestone when the school was officially christened Siena College. Between 1962 and 1973, it broadened its educational horizons by adding six majors while deciding to focus on undergraduate education.
Siena continued to evolve vigorously over the following 40 years, ensuring that its course list grows with the times. The autumn of 2016 was ushered in by the unveiling of a new rugby pitch, fostering the spirit of teamwork.
