As the tale goes, Governor Cadwallader Washburn enveloped Edgewood Villa with his warmth in 1873, subsequently gifting it to the Dominican Sisters. His dream? To transform it into a hub for education. The journey commenced with St. Regina Academy, an exclusive boarding school for girls, opening its doors to its first 16 students on September 15, 1881. The tuition was a modest $165 per year, with extra classes for music ringing in at $8 to $12 per quarter!
It wasn't long before bursts of laughter and profound learning outgrew the walls of the Villa. In 1893, a new building sprang up, powerful and proud, bearing the Dominican's motto, "Veritas," or truth. But fate had a bitter twist in store; a fatal fire on November 16 razed the Villa and academy, taking with it three innocent lives. A dark period of doubt befell the Sisters, but they refused to abandon hope. The unwavering support sprangled in a benefit concert on November 28 led them to rebuild dreams anew.
The dawning of 1894 saw a fresh phoenix rise from the ashes of St. Regina Academy, christened Sacred Heart Academy. The significantly expanded campus, which cost $36,719 to construct, welcomed its first batch of 40 students on September 5, 1894.
Inching closer to its lofty vision, Edgewood inked a significant chapter in its history in May 1927, when it got the nod from the President of the University of Wisconsin–Madison to open a Junior College for women. Born out of a burgeoning student population, the college opened its doors to 12 empowered women on September 4, 1927, amid courses ranging from mathematics and English to French and German.
Edgewood Academy's transformation into a four-year college was finally realized in 1941, with the stamp of approval from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The following year, the first 25 students were bestowed with Bachelor of Science degrees in Education.

The next few decades saw a flurry of exciting initiatives and collaborations, but the institution's most significant evolutionary leap was perhaps its induction into the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) in the '80s. This enabled Edgewood to broaden its horizons, creating new facilities and expanding existing ones.
Fast-forward to Spring 2011, the pride of Edgewood College encompassed a hearty mix of 2,650 students from diverse cultural and international backgrounds. Of these, about 1,550 were undergraduates and 700 were part of various graduate programs.
