It honours the Ramapough, a tribe of the Lenape Indians. Among those who chose this beautiful valley for their home was Theodore Havemeyer, co-founder of the American Sugar Company, in the blossoming 1870s.
Picture a majestic mansion, sprawled over a vast 1,000 acres (400 ha), seasoned with the allure of a flourishing farm. That was the opulence Havemeyer built for himself. Come 1889, there stood yet another mansion on this land, a grand gift from a father to his beloved daughter. That 19th-century grandeur remains unforgotten; the second mansion and around 700 acres (280 ha) of the original enchanted estate were bought later by Stephen Birch, an eminent figure who presided over the Kennecott Copper Company.
Ramapo Valley's illustrious history took another fascinating turn in 1968. The New Jersey Department of Higher Education, recognizing the growing population and suburbanization of Bergen County, decided it was time for a state college. What was the checklist? A sizeable land area for immediate needs and future expansion, with at least one major highway nearby. They also wisely considered the geography of existing academic institutions, both public and private.
Step in George Potter, an accomplished administrator from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Even before they had zeroed in on the college's location, Potter was instated as the college's first President. And where did this academic journey lead them? To the Birch Estate in Mahwah, where the college currently stands. Although stationed more northwards than initially planned, it won hearts with its proximity to Route 17 and rugged mountain views.
Devised by visionaries, the architectural plans sketched a striking L-shaped glass-walled campus, having five two-story academic buildings linked by expansive entry spaces. Each building had a focused objective, it was allocated to a specific department or division.
