History Wesleyan University

Imagine stepping into the grounds where once a military academy stood, an academy founded by Captain Alden Partridge. Now take a leap in time to 1831, when methodists hailing from New England bought the land after the academy closed down. They dedicated their hearts into developing a collegiate institute. This, my dear friends, marks the birth of Wesleyan University, with Willbur Fisk as its auspicious first president.

Now, you might mistake the name 'Wesleyan' indicative of a religious affiliation. But, contrary to this notion, Wesleyan, since its very inception, has maintained its independence, steering clear of becoming a denominational seminary. Yes, it embraced Methodist influence in shaping the curriculum and moulding campus life but remained a secular institution. A testament to this commitment is Judd Hall, named after an illustrious alumnus, Orange Judd, standing tall since 1909 as a beacon of undergraduate science education.

Tracing the growth of the Wesleyan student body is like watching a sapling grow into a magnificent tree. Starting with a humbler number of around 300 students in 1910, it burgeoned to house 800 young minds by 1960. Wesleyan thrived, claiming its rightful position alongside Amherst and Williams colleges, as a member of the prestigious 'Little Three'. Although the smallest of the trio initially, Wesleyan embarked on a journey of expansive growth.

Back in 1872, Wesleyan, always ahead of its times, opened its doors to a handful of female students in a then-novel approach known as the "Wesleyan Experiment". However, fears clouded the trustees' minds about damaging the masculine identity and economic implications, leading to the ceasing of admitting women in 1909. It wasn't until 1970, almost 60 years later, that the university rectified this and began admitting women again.

The Methodist church released its hold on Wesleyan officially in 1937. Fast forward to the year 2000; the university got recognized as a historic Methodist site. Venturing to make the university experience more immersive, Victor Lloyd Butterfield, in the late 1950s, introduced a residential college system that drew parallels to Harvard's house system and Yale's colleges. This involved diving the undergraduate studies across seven residential colleges. Imagine living and learning in close-knit communities, each with its faculty!

Now picture the lush Foss Hill, home to three residential colleges, built as part of this invigorating academic endeavour. They were soon followed by three more – the Butterfield colleges. Not all proposed plans reached fruition, but two continue to inspire today – the College of Letters and the College of Social Studies, thanks to the fundraising prowess of Butterfield.

The torch of innovation was passed onto his successors, Edwin Deacon Etherington - a Wesleyan alumnus - and Colin Goetze Campbell. They let women into Wesleyan outnumbering men and increased the scope of laboratory, performance and studio space. Not only did the diversity of the student body rise, but so did the total number of students.

Wesleyan University and its admission deans achieved an honourable mention in Jacques Steinberg's 2002 book, 'The Gatekeepers: Inside The Admissions Process of a Premier College'. To conclude with a recent fact, a proud alumnus of the mighty Wesleyan, Michael S. Roth, ascended to office as the esteemed university's 16th president in the fall of 2007. So, there you have it - an amalgamation of rich history and progressive ambitions - the essence of what Wesleyan University truly represents.
