Imagine a time when sixteen girls from orphan backgrounds came together under the guidance of a single dedicated teacher. It was a chilly fall day, October 3, 1849, and history was in the making as the Kentucky Female Orphan School opened its doors. These pioneering spirits inhabited a modest building, set amidst five acres of land, under the watchful eyes of a nine-member Board of Trustees.
Two extraordinary individuals, Dr. L.L. (Lewis Letig) Pinkerton, a committed minister of the Midway Christian Church from 1844 to 1860, and Mr. James Ware Parrish, an elder at the same church, were the driving forces behind such a monumental establishment. With the aid of Kentucky Senator Major George W. Williams, they secured a charter for the school from the Kentucky legislature, a journey that began on February 17, 1847.
Before they could realize their vision, these change-makers had to amass an endowment of twenty-five grand and make strategic investments. This period wasn’t merely a fundraising endeavor but also a time for buying land, raising a building, and framing the governance structure and management blueprint for the school.
Every story has its humble beginnings, and so did the Kentucky Female Orphan School. At the helm of affairs was John Dawson, the Superintendent, and his wife, Mary, who led as the Matron. Their dedication and passion echoed through the empty corridors and uncarpeted floors. In the words of Eliza Davies, the associate principal and assistant matron, the girls initially had to make do with sleeping on straw mattresses.
Education at the Kentucky Female Orphan School revolved around four main points, comparable to a rigorous high school curriculum encompassing diverse disciplines – from physics, astronomy, algebra, geometry, and psychology to the complexities of grammar, literature, history, and Latin. To top it all, music, a universal language, was a crucial part of the curriculum. Midway prided itself on the caliber of their students, with many graduating with an impressive twenty-five credits against the typical sixteen required for graduation.

On July 1, 2015, the college was renamed to Midway University, which further broke its traditional norms to welcome male students to its day program for the first time in the fall of 2016.
