History Tulane University

Imagine yourself in the United States of 1834. Fear is rampant given the threats of smallpox, yellow fever, and cholera. During this period of concern, the pillars of Tulane University came into existence as the Medical College of Louisiana. A significant milestone as it became the second medical school in the South, and only the 15th in the United States.

Fast forward to 1847, an important gear in the historic clock ticks as the state legislature elevates the school to the University of Louisiana. It embraces broader academic horizons, including the fascinating world of law. Four years later, the academic palette expands even further as the university establishes its first academic department.

As the calendar turns to the 1860s, the university shuts its doors temporarily. The culprit? An event shaking the foundations of America - the Civil War. However, it's not long before it reopens, although it's a rocky start, traversing economic challenges due to the agricultural depression in the south.

You might think, how did it survive this blow? The answer lies in a generous gesture from a successful businessman named Paul Tulane. His contribution was so extensive it led to the creation of a Tulane Educational Fund (TEF). Not only did this secure the University of Louisiana, but through some influential moves by a former Confederate general, Randall Lee Gibson, it also saw the birth of the Tulane University of Louisiana in 1884.

As we step into the era of the 1880s, significant changes take place. William Preston Johnston takes office as the first president of Tulane. This is a man who had filled the shoes of Robert E. Lee as president of Washington and Lee University after Lee's death. And speaking of firsts, 1885 saw the establishment of its graduate division, leading to the creation of the Graduate School.

Another interesting turn of events follows. Josephine Louise Newcomb, propels forward the cause of women's education by donating over $3.6 million. This massive contribution led to the establishment of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the first coordinate college for women in the United States.

Embracing the 20th century brought with it a wave of advancements at Tulane University. With its strong foundation, the institution introduced architecture, dentistry, pharmacy, commerce in its curriculum. It also made steps into researching tropical botany, history and the natural resource of the countries across the waters of New Orleans.

Despite being tested by times of war and disaster, including World War II and the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, the university remained resilient. In fact, it creatively adapted to the situations, with relocation of schools or by introducing distance learning courses.

In recent years, Tulane University reached commendable milestones. It increased its endowment to over $1.1 billion, introduced a public service graduation requirement, and survived the damage from Hurricane Ida in 2021. Even under trying circumstances, the university continues to embrace change and rise above challenges.

As you look back, you can't help but marvel at the journey this institution travelled from its humble beginnings as a medical college in 1834 to becoming a diverse and innovative educational institution today. With its rich history, wouldn't you agree that Tulane University became a beacon of light for education in the South?
