History University of New Orleans

Once upon a time in 1956, in a bustling city of New Orleans, USA, a state senator with foresight, Theodore M. Hickey, decided to open the gates of knowledge and learning to the city. Envisioning a place of learning, accessible to all- public and not private, he authored an act to establish what we now know as the University of New Orleans (UNO). The city was not devoid of educational institutions, though none was public. Perhaps Hickey saw the potential and inaccessibility of education to those who couldn't afford the fees of prestigious institutions like Tulane, Loyola, and Dillard. While Tulane was initially state-supported, it was privatized in 1884, further causing the need for a public institution.

The university was initially born as a branch of Louisiana State University, christened as Louisiana State University in New Orleans (LSUNO). It was a tribute to Theodore M. Hickey and his indomitable spirit that the UNO University Ballroom was named after him in 2014. This was long after his passing, but it was a testament to the legacy he left behind.

This bright beacon of education took residence on the New Orleans Lakefront, which had once housed the US Navy's Naval Air Station. When the Navy moved the station, the land was leased to the LSU Board of Supervisors by the Orleans Levee Board. The hard work of builders and administrators bore fruit quicker than anticipated, and in 1958, just two years after inception, the institute was ready for the next generation of learners.

UNO was not just a conventional university, it was the first to initiate racial integration in the South, welcoming everyone without the barrier of color. Innovating the educational scene of the time, LSUNO was no longer an extension of the main campus in Baton Rouge. By 1962, the LSU System of Higher Education was established and LSUNO became an independent campus within the system. This independence and equal status changed the designation of the chief admin from "Vice President in Charge" to "Chancellor".

A decade later, in a much-awaited move, the LSU Board of Supervisors officially christened the independent institution as the "University of New Orleans". Years flowed by and in 2011, there was another significant transfer. UNO moved from LSU's umbrella to the University of Louisiana system, this time with a new leader titled the "President".

Disaster struck in August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the university. Winds, rain, and storm strife left the university in distress. The Bienville Hall dormitories, the Engineering Building, and the Lafitte Village couple apartments were hit with water damage. The hurricane ruptured city life, drowning it beneath water and chaos. Especially hard hit was UNO, which served as a crucial part of New Orleans' education infrastructure.

But when the going gets tough, the tough get going. UNO was the first large university of the affected lot to get back on its feet. It started with virtual and limited web-based courses within two months of the disaster. The main campus took a little longer, with its gates reopening for eager students in December 2005.

While Hurricane Katrina did leave a scar on the enrollment numbers, UNO did not get discouraged. As with any wound, it took time to heal and now is steadily inching towards regaining its pre-Katrina student strength. Resilient and always reaching out with the beacon of knowledge, UNO stands as a testament to the spirit of education and the city it represents.
