History Manhattan School of Music

In the historical corridors of New York, nestled between the timelines of 1917 and 1918, a musician and philanthropist with a heart of gold, Janet D. Schenck, founded a music school. At first, everyone knew it as the "Neighborhood Music School". Its genesis was in East Harlem, at the Union Settlement Association located on 104th St in Manhattan.

Imagine the melodies that danced through the East Harlem air. Ever heard of the famous cellist Pablo Casals? Or the skilled pianist Harold Bauer? These were among the first celebrated artists who guided this humble school. As time passed, the 'Neighborhood Music School' transformed and it became the Manhattan School of Music.

As the years rolled by, the school blossomed both artistically and academically. In 1943, the school celebrated its maiden achievement, the charter amendment granting the bachelor of music degree. Not one to rest on laurels, it added a master of music degree in 1947 to its cap. And, in 1974, it went a step further by offering the coveted degree of doctor of musical arts.

In 1956, another transformation was in the cards as the school ushered in a new era under the leadership of John Brownlee. After retirement of Dr. Schenck, Brownlee, the distinguished Metropolitan Opera baritone took the reins. It was under his visionary leadership that the plan to relocate the school to the Morningside Heights neighborhood was born. Unfortunately, Brownlee passed away before he could see his plans come to fruition.

The baton was then handed over to George Schick in 1969. Schick, an accomplished conductor, accompanist, and opera coach at the Metropolitan Opera, not only spearheaded the school’s move to its current location but also introduced the opera program. Meanwhile, Stanley Bednar, as the Senior Director, took charge of the other major functions at the school.

The year 1976 marked the arrival of a new president, John O. Crosby, founder and director of the Santa Fe Opera. Crosby's tenure was followed by the appointment of Gideon W. Waldrop in 1986 and then Peter C. Simon in 1989.

On the 1st of July, 1992, it was the turn of Marta Casals Istomin to steer the ship. Istomin kept the school afloat till October 2005, when she finally hung up her boots.

In 2005, the dynamic Dr. Robert Sirota, former director of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, took over the presidency. Sirota passed the torch to James Gandre, from Roosevelt University, in May 2013.

So, you see, the Manhattan School of Music is not just about notes and scales. It's a story of vision, transformation, and resilience. It's where melodies are life and music, the heartbeat. It's where students from across the globe come chasing their dreams, armed with nothing but an unyielding passion for music.
