Envision the dawn of a new education era in Petersburg, Virginia. It's March 6, 1882, and an exciting milestone has been achieved. The legal papers granting charter to the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute have just fallen upon the table. Behind this historic breakthrough was a respected Black attorney, named Alfred W. Harris. Notably, he hailed from Dinwiddie County and kept his professional premises in Petersburg, a fact some of you legal enthusiasts might feel resonance with.
However, the glow of success was briefly dullened as a belligerent lawsuit pushed the university's opening to the later date of October 1, 1883, a delay of nineteen whole months. Jump ahead to 1902 when the legislature decided they wanted a piece of the action, revising the charter to limit the collegiate program and renaming it Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute.
The roaring '20s brought about new transitions. With the removal of the land-grant program for Black students from the private Hampton Institute to the Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute in 1920, was a resurgence of the college program and a name update to 'Virginia State College for Negroes' in 1930. Shortly afterwards, they extended their wing to Norfolk in 1944, which eventually spread its independence in 1969 as Norfolk State College. Meanwhile, its parent school had another makeover, this time becoming Virginia State College in 1946.
Interesting fact: The year 1979 saw another update, this time to – yes, you guessed it! - Virginia State University. A timeline of name-change, wouldn’t you agree? You might be wondering, what was it like for the early scholars? Well, in its maiden academic year, 1883-1884, the university boasted a strong lineup with 126 students, seven dedicated faculty members (all Black), a modest 33-acre campus, and a single building. With a library that held only 200 books and a budget of $20,000, the humble beginnings of Virginia State are far from its grand stature today.
Fast forward a century and you see the transformation. Fully integrated by 1982, the university proudly enrolled nearly 5,000 students, an array of faculty that topped around 250, a library blooming with over 200,000 books and various items, and a budget that had multiplied by many times. The expanse of the campus - a sprawling 236 acres with an additional 416-acre farm - was dotted with more than 50 buildings, and was conveniently accessible via Interstates 95 and 85.
On to the administrative reins, Virginia State University could boast of its first president - John Mercer Langston, an eminent Black leader of the time, who retains his uniqueness till 1992 as the only Black man ever elected to the United States Congress from Virginia. Aren't you amazed at how the adversity-ridden university still managed to conquer academic challenges under the leadership of four presidents from 1888 to 1968?
Hold your hats, as the next two decades saw a leadership change flurry with six presidents taking command from 1968-1992. Breaking convention in 2015 was Dr. Pamela V. Hammond, the first woman to sit on the president's chair at Virginia State University, 133 years into its formation. Following her, a young Chicago native, the charismatic Dr. Makola Abdullah, became the 14th president of the university in 2016.
To underestimate Virginia State University's recognition wouldn't be fair, for it received the largest donation in its history from MacKenzie Scott in 2020, a whopping sum of $30 million. Now that's a grand ending to our tale on Virginia State, don't you think?
