History The University of the Arts

The journey of the University of the Arts is an inspiring narrative of growth and transformation, dating back to 1870. In that year, the Philadelphia Musical Academy lifted the curtain for its debut. Picture a world in the throes of the industrial revolution, where the harmonious allure of music and the wondrous fascination of artifacts engaged the hearts and minds of people.

Within this dynamic context, the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art emerged in 1876, aiming to cultivate and promote the splendor of art. A year later, in 1877, the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music was born to celebrate the symphony of melodies. The resonating sounds of cello and piano echoed within its walls, setting the stage for decades of musical journey.

Flash forward to 1921, a year of significance that witnessed the audacity of Marian Anderson. After graduating from South Philadelphia High School, the vibrant contralto knocked on the Philadelphia Musical Academy's door. Shockingly, the Academy shut its door on this determined woman because of the color of her skin. Today, progress and inclusivity reign as the University's School of Music has a black leader at the helm, Dean Kevin Haden.

Fast forward to 1938, the Museum changed its name to the Philadelphia Museum of Art whilst the school embraced the title - Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. In the'swinging sixties', specifically 1964, the school declared its independence from the museum, adopting a new identity as the Philadelphia Museum College of Art (PMCA).

The year 1944 oversaw the establishment of the Children's Dance Theatre, later morphing into the Philadelphia Dance Academy. Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck was the pioneering spirit behind this initiative of rhythmic expressions. A couple of decades later, in 1962, the Conservatory of Music and the Musical Academy joined hands, leading to the Dance Academy's acquisition in 1976. As a result, the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts came to life.

Fast forward to the year 1983, the institution cemented its place in history by becoming the first performing arts college in Pennsylvania to offer comprehensive courses in music, dance, and theater. Today, this ground-breaking institution is known as the College of Performing Arts of the University of the Arts.

The year 1985 was a game-changer for both the Philadelphia Museum College of Art and the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts. They sought growth through alliance and merged to form the impressive Philadelphia Colleges of the Arts. Fast forward two years to 1987, the union transformed into the eminent University of the Arts.

In the dawn of a digital world, 1996 observed the university further expanding its academic wings by adding a third bastion, the College of Media and Communication. 15 years later, in 2011, the College of Media and Communication merged with the College of Art and Design to become an integrated powerhouse - the College of Art, Media & Design.

There you have it, a whirlwind of a journey from musical academies and art schools of the 19th century to a comprehensive and inclusive institution of the 21st. A captivating narrative that leaves one inspired and yearning to be part of this esteemed institution's story. It's your chance now to etch your name into the annals of the University of the Arts, adding to its illustrious history and continuing the legacy.
