Our tale begins back in 1935 when the Church of God, initiated by the visionary Daniel Sidney Warner, took the first step towards the creation of an educational establishment. With a future-focused mindset, they voted to lay the foundation stone of the institution in September of that year. Now, you might wonder, where does this journey lead us? By January 1936, the members of the church had purchased a piece of land in Spokane, Washington. It was here that they chose to build the academic dreams of countless young individuals. On February 9, 1937, the school was beautifully christened as Pacific Bible College, with its doors eventually thrown open to students in October of the same year.
The Pacific Bible College, however, was not destined to stay put in Washington. The wheels of change began to turn in 1940, bringing the institution to settle in the Mount Tabor neighborhood of Southeast Portland, Oregon. Here, surrounded by the peaceful tranquility of this lovely locale, the college began to truly embody its current identity.
As the years passed and the school grew, another significant milestone was reached. In 1959, the school blossomed into Warner Pacific College, paying homage to Daniel Sidney Warner. Two years later, the college crossed another important threshold. It received full accreditation by the prestigious Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in 1961, boosting its credibility and marking a moment of triumph for everyone involved.
The ambitions of this remarkable institution were not settled yet. Over the years, there were attempts made at expanding the campus, most notably in 2006. At that time, the university attempted to purchase a nine-acre section of adjoining city land, represented by the eminent attorney and previous Parks commissioner, Jim Francesconi. However, like many epic journeys, there were hiccups along the way. Their plan took a detour when the neighborhood association objected, believing the sale of public land was not appropriate.
In 2018, another chapter was added to this epic journey. The college evolved once more, donning a new identity as Warner Pacific University. From Pacific Bible College to Warner Pacific University, the institution had come a long way, keeping its core values intact while embracing the challenges of an ever-changing education landscape.
The journey, however, did not stop here. Mayor may not you have known? In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the university received a federally backed small business loan from Washington Trust Bank. The lifeline, worth between $1 million and $2 million, was extended as part of the Paycheck Protection Program, paving the way for the university to continue its mission during these unchartered times.
