History Providence College

Back in 1917, Providence College sprouted its roots as an all-boys' institution, fostered through the collaborative efforts of the Diocese of Providence and the Dominican Province of St. Joseph. Spearheading this unique endeavour was Matthew Harkins, the then-Bishop of Providence, who dreamt of building an advanced learning centre for Rhode Island's Catholic youth. The school opened its doors on the intersection of Eaton Street and River Avenue, kicking off its journey with only Harkins Hall as its sole building.

The first batch comprised a humble count of 71 students, who were under the tutelage of nine dedicated Dominican teachers. The initial years under President Dennis Albert Casey's leadership (1917–1921) were a rollercoaster. But then came President William D. Noon (1921–1927). His tenure saw the institute's first lay faculty member on board and the inauguration of its first dormitory - Guzman Hall, renamed later as Martin Hall.

Next, President Lorenzo C. McCarthy (1927–1936) stepped in. Under his helm, the Providence athletic team was christened as the "Friars." Decked in black and white, they quickly gained fame in basketball, football, and baseball. In 1933, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges granted accreditation to this growing institution. 1935 was another landmark year in Providence's timeline as it awarded its first Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, and Master of Science degrees. It was also the year when the school's newspaper, The Cowl, published its first edition.

The late 30s brought a surge in student enrolment at Providence. To cater to the swelling crowds, Aquinas Hall dormitory was constructed. However, World War II had a bigger plan in store. The tumbling enrolment figures alarmed President John J. Dillon. He urged Rhode Island's congressional delegation to pressure the War Department to assign an Army Specialized Training Program unit to Providence. By the summer of 1943, Unit #1188 had arrived, ensuring the college's continued operation. Around 380 soldier-students poured in, further invigorating the college's landscape before leaving for overseas duties.

President Robert J. Slavin's tenure (1947 to 1961) witnessed significant expansions. In 1955, Providence brought the House of Good Shepard property under its jurisdiction, expanding its boundaries to Huxley Avenue. Slavin also ushered in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) in 1951, and the Liberal Arts Honors Program in 1957.

The Friars' growing popularity paved the way for the college's acceptance into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1948. Hiring of Joe Mullaney as the men's basketball coach and opening of Alumni Hall in 1955 for local high schools' basketball tournaments further escalated the athletic fervour. With each passing President and decade, Providence continued to upscale its academic, infrastructural, and cultural trajectory.

The year 1967 marked a progressive shift with the addition of the first lay faculty members in the Theology and Philosophy departments, and the hiring of the first full-time female faculty member. By 1970, Providence had decided to welcome female students, steering a noteworthy change on its gender landscape. As the years rolled on, the late 80s and early 90s saw the college joining the NCAA tournament, winning the inaugural Hockey East Championship, and leveraging the exposure for fundraising as well as infrastructural development.

Through the 90s and into the new millennium, the dominos of growth, development, and change continued to fall, shaking up Providence's traditional landscape. The list of achievements kept growing - a new chapel, innovative programs, prestigious recognition, new buildings - everything added a new bead to Providence's ever-growing necklace of achievements.

Navigating through societal shifts and making history in response to them, Providence crafted a legacy of resilience. Its ability to adapt and constantly evolve while staying anchored to its founding ethos made it an institution of national repute. As we look back at its journey, each President's term, every student cohort, and all the highs and lows have woven together to create the vibrant tapestry of Providence College. Today, a century later, its journey serves like a beacon for its present and future students, inspiring them to dream, change, and grow, just like Providence itself did.
