Back in the golden summer of 1922, an invocation of female empowerment took urban Cleveland, Ohio, by storm when Notre Dame College came into being. Nestled on Ansel Road, the college blossomed under the visionary guidance of nuns Mother M. Cecilia Romen and Mother Mary Evarista Harks, the latter of whom went on to serve as the first president of NDC from 1922 to 1943. Can you imagine, just in its formative years, the college boasted a devoted faculty of 9, nurturing an earnest student pool of 13 women and 11 novices. Alongside, 30 more students expanded their learning through extension courses.
The college's momentum was unstoppable. On June 15, 1925, joy was in the air as NDC crowned its first two-year teaching certification holders. The following year held even greater jubilation as the college jubilantly watched 14 students step into the world, armed with bachelor's degrees and state certificates, ready to enlighten Ohio high schools. That made them NDC's first cohort to earn four-year college degrees.
Ever focused on expansion, the Sisters of Notre Dame signed a lease for 39 acres of land along Green Road in South Euclid in June 1923. A year later, 15 more acres were purchased. Fast forward to fall 1926. It was a time of riveting anticipation as construction for a new campus began. On Sept. 17, 1928, the excitement peaked when the doors of the newly built campus were thrown open. Generous growth continued, and by 1933, NDC became the proud owner of the previously leased land.
The physical development of NDC was unstoppable. Indeed, the college that began in just a single building, embraced growth at every opportunity. 1955 saw the construction of Harks Hall to house resident students. More resident students found a home when two additional halls were built in the 1960s. The 1971, the Clara Fritzsche Library came into being, and in 1987, the Keller Center.
It was in 1978 when Notre Dame College started a unique program - Weekend College, affectionately known as WECO. This initiative allowed local residents, struck by the constraints of time, to pursue their degrees over the weekends. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2003. On December 8, 1983, another feather was added to NDC's cap. Its Administration Building, an architectural marvel conceived by architect Thomas D. McLaughlin and brought to life by contractor John T. Gill, was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places as Notre Dame College of Ohio.
Accelerating into the 90s, Notre Dame started a Master of Education program in the fall of 1991. By 1994, the college was already celebrating its first M.Ed. graduates. NDC's commitment to inclusivity was cemented in 2001 when the college became officially coeducational. Its first co-ed class graduated on May 7, 2005. After becoming coeducational, the college saw a magnificent surge in enrollment, going from nearly 1,000 in 2001 to over 2,000 in 2010.
