More than 90 years ago, in the year 1927, a one-of-a-kind educational institution was born. Helmed by Eugene H. Rietzke, a United States Navy veteran Radioman (Master Chief), Capitol Technology University emerged as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute. It was a correspondence school that would allow students from different localities to learn from afar.
Come 1932, just five short years after its inception, the institute took a significant leap forward. A residential division was inaugurated, where students could actually live at the institute and learn hands-on in laboratories. The institute, boasting this unique feature, stood strong for the next 30 years, situated at the intersection of 16th Street NW and Park Road in Washington, D.C.
Just after World War II, in 1946, the institute, known then as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute, received accreditation from the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), a recognition that meant a lot for the institute and its students.
Moving swiftly along, let's jump to the year 1964. The institute did something quite remarkable, selling its correspondence division which comprised a good 20% of its total business. This move ended the association with McGraw-Hill Continuing Education Center. In its stead, the residential school took on a new identity, becoming the Capitol Institute of Technology.
Just a couple of years later, in 1966, the newly named Capitol Institute of Technology received a significant boost. They had the approval from the District of Columbia to award Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering technology. However, by 1969, with the vision to cater to a growing number of enthusiastic learners, they had to relocate to a larger facility in Kensington, Maryland.
Fast-forward to 1976, and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) gave the institute its full accreditation. This allowed the institute to start receiving federal and state grants, making it possible to construct a new campus located at the site of the former Beltsville Speedway. It took three years, but the campus was finally completed in September 1983.
A few years later in 1986, equipped with the new Telecommunications Hall and a 340-seat Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Auditorium, Telecommunications Hall successfully found its place in the institute's portfolio.
Then came the transformative year of 1987. The Board of Trustees agreed on a comprehensive Five-Point Plan. This included a shift in the educational system from a quarter system to a semester system, creating on-campus student housing, developing new curricula in electrical engineering and telecommunications, and a change in the institute's name to Capitol College.
Just a couple of years into this transformational plan, in January 1989, six apartment-style residence halls, each named after famous inventors, were built for the student's accommodation. In parallel, the Graduate School was created to offer the college's first Master's degrees in the field of systems management.
In 2010, the institution introduced its first doctoral degree program. Its Doctor of Science in Cybersecurity degree was targeted at full-time professionals who wanted to take their career to the next level. At the same time, several other doctoral programs were also launched.
Then in mid-2014, the institution was re-christened as Capitol Technology University by the state of Maryland. Fast track to June 1, 2017, the torch of leadership was passed on to Dr. Bradford L. Sims, who currently serves as the eighth president of the university. The university has continued to grow under his leadership, making adding another feather in the cap of this prestigious institution that's been making history since 1927.
