History Washington Adventist University

In the heart of 1904, an educational beacon was born. The Seventh-day Adventist Church took the initiative to forge a path where dreams could take flight. The bold step? They put bricks and mortar together to form what they christened the Washington Training College. A modest start, yet what great oak tree doesn't come from a mere acorn seed?

Then, a major milestone arrived a short three years after. We were still young but ready for transformation. 1907 saw the institution undergo its first name change. From then on, we began our journey as Washington Foreign Mission Seminary.

A beautiful lesson from history is that evolution is inevitable, and we were no different. The year 1914 was knocking, and we warmly welcomed it with a new change. That year, we declared a fresh beginning as Washington Missionary College.

This might come as a surprise, but brace yourself - yet another metamorphosis awaited us. Each change was not a mere alteration of name, but a symbol of growth, adaptation, and progress. In 1961, we embraced a new identity, Columbia Union College.

And then, the final name change. The year was 2009, a year to remember, pending a major transition. It was that year that we settled upon our ongoing name, which reflects our commitment to our students and our city – Washington Adventist University, or WAU.

Here's something you might find thoroughly intriguing. Once, in 2007, we faced a cliffhanger. We nearly said yes to a whopping $25 million offer for our radio station - WGTS 91.9 FM. American Public Media Group stood on one side of the ring, proposed this enticing sum, but our listeners joined the other side to bat for us.
Their opposition carried the day as the trustees voted against the sale in September 2007. If the sale had gone through, we would have used the money first to reduce our $5 million debt and to boost our $4 million endowment.

Now, buckle up, I’m taking you to another important turn in our story. 2008 was the year. WAU's President at that time, Weymouth Spence, made a daunting announcement. This included the elimination or freezing of up to 22 staff positions. The aim? To restructure our curriculum and address our multimillion-dollar debt. You might imagine this sent ripples of uncertainty and displeasure among some faculty and students.

And finally, the most crucial part of the tale unveils the plan. Spence's grand vision was to transform WAU into a health-science-focused institution. Despite the initial shocks and bumps on the way, here we are, thriving and evolving, with our purpose intact and stronger than ever. And that, my dear students and parents, is our tale. We hope you’ll join us in the next chapter of our story.
