History The State University of New York (SUNY) - Maritime College

Imagine delving into the vast annals of U.S history and stumbling upon the first of its kind - the Maritime College, a seasoned veteran in imparting maritime education. Dating back to 1873, the foundations of this prestigious institution lie in the turmoil of the Civil War and the subsequent, somewhat unsettling decline of the American maritime industry. Concerns crescendoed about the professionalism of naval officers, leading the New York Chamber of Commerce and other maritime enthusiasts to convince the state legislature to take a bold step. Their mission: to establish a professional nautical school for the bustling city.

But as fate would have it, a school without a ship was like a bird without wings. Enter Stephen B. Luce, a respected advocate for naval education reform. Using all his diplomatic skills and influence, Luce successfully persuaded congress in 1874 to approve an act allowing states to acquire retired or obsolete vessels for training purposes. The state of New York was quick to jump onboard, requesting a training vessel from the Navy.

So, on an unseasonably chilly December afternoon, the USS St. Mary's sailed majestically into New York harbor. This venerable ship became the first home of the New York Nautical School, the fledgling avatar of what we now know as the Maritime College. Initially run by the Board of Education of the City of New York, this was a chameleon of a school, offering common school subjects and specialized nautical classes during the winter term and real-world cruises in the summer. Over time, as the maritime industry expanded, the school introduced more advanced and professional subjects into its curriculum.

Let's time travel to 1907, fast-forwarding through financial hiccups and survival crises. The St. Mary's made way for the more modern sail-steam hybrid gunboat, the Newport. The school almost had to close its books in 1913 due to escalating costs. But the state of New York stepped in, assuming management and renaming the institution the New York State Nautical School. Through tumultuous budget discussions and threats of closure in 1916, the combined efforts of the maritime industry and alumni kept the institution afloat.

Dedicating itself to the mission of creating skilled American merchant marines, the school witnessed significant growth under the guidance of a Board of Governors and the Superintendent. In 1921, the school found itself nestling on Bedloe's Island (now known as Liberty Island), making use of army facilities. However, the conditions on the island were soon deemed inadequate for training modern merchant mariners.

Intense efforts led by then superintendent James Harvey Tomb resulted in the acquisition of a larger ship, the Procyon (later renamed the Empire State), and a land-based institution in 1927. The new ship substantially increased the school's capacity. Further, in 1929, the school gained the moniker New York State Merchant Marine Academy, finally settling at its current location, Fort Schuyler in the Throggs Neck area, in 1938.

One of Franklin D. Roosevelt's final acts as Governor of New York State was the transfer of Fort Schuyler and the Throggs Neck peninsula to the school for higher education purposes. Restoration work was carried out by the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration (TERA) and the Works Progress Administration. By 1938, the fort was ready to house the school permanently.

1941 witnessed another name change with the institution becoming the New York State Maritime Academy. Five years later, the academy was authorized to confer degrees, earning the title of 'college'. Notably, in 1948, the college was incorporated into the pioneering institutions of the State University of New York system. After a year, in 1949, it adopted its current name, the State University of New York Maritime College. Reading this story, you may feel like you've traveled through centuries, but in reality, this historical journey is nothing short of a rollercoaster of transformation, resilience, and growth.
