On an auspicious day in July 1969, Illinois Governor Richard B. Ogilvie embarked on a direct path of revolution in the field of education.
The goal? To enact House Bill 666 and establish Governors State University. An upper-division institution of
education, GSU became a new bough in the Illinois state-supported educational institutions.
Here's the surprising part though - initial plans projected a start in September 1973. But the universe had different plans. Speeding up the clock, the four-year planning period was compressed into two, resulting in the arrival of its inaugural class of 500 ambitious students a couple of years early, in September 1971. Imagine that!
The journey wasn't smooth as silk - obstacles popped up here and there. Warehouses served as a temporary refuge for the university, during the construction of the campus. A bit unconventional, but it did the job. Temporary adversity for a permanent settlement.
Under the watchful guidance of its first president, William Engbretson, GSU embraced the flavor of experimentation. They fostered collaborative learning in class sessions called modules, designed to last for eight-weeks per session. It was not just a university, but a place where traditional educational walls crumbled, making way for innovation. A promising beginning indeed!
But the most extraordinary thing? It was one of the original "Universities without Walls". GSU pioneered a new approach to education with no grades, but competencies as benchmarks. A radical departure from typical academic settings, it blurred disciplinary boundaries, and every professor walked the halls carrying the title of a University Professor.
With the stepping down of Engbretson and ascension of Leo Goodman-Malamuth as the next president, transformations took place. GSU transitioned from an experimental curriculum to a more traditional model.
Swapping open spaces for classes and offices. Implementing structured classes on a trimester basis. Making room for traditional transcripts. Change was in the air!
But GSU never strayed far from its roots. It remained committed to serving those often overlooked by traditional universities, such as veterans and nontraditional students with leftover college credits, but no degree to show for it. So, they pioneered telecourses in the 1980s. These classes were shot in GSU's television studios and then either distributed via tape or broadcast on cable channels. Thinking out of the box, don't you agree?
In 2007, came another landmark achievement for GSU. It established its first doctoral program, offering a professional degree in physical therapy. But they didn't stop there. Other doctoral programs in nursing, occupational therapy, and education soon followed suit. Constant evolution, that's what GSU stood for!
Fast-forward to 2014, GSU gained approval to expand its curriculum for fresher undergraduates. Along with this, they formed their first on-campus residence hall, pleasingly named Prairie Place. A key change? Small classrooms with a cap of 30 students per session. All coachings were taught by full-time faculty. What a journey!
