In the mid-19th century, when Minnesota was still a frontier of the fast-expanding United States, the need for educated and competent trainers of young minds was deeply felt. In response, a passionate settler from the small town of Winona, John Ford, swung into action and advocated for the establishment of state-run normal schools - institutions aimed solely at preparing future elementary school teachers.
With persuasive lobbying skills and impressive resource mobilization, Ford managed to rally public support and a surprising $5,000 in donations. This was the seed money for the creation of Minnesota's premier normal school in 1860, setting it apart as the first tax-supported educational establishment located on the west side of the Mississippi River.
But, the school's trials and tribulations didn't end there. As the First State Normal School, now known as Winona State University, opened its doors to eager students in September 1860, it was soon hit by the harsh realities of the American Civil War. This national conflict, raging from 1861-1865, saw most of its male students and staff headed off to serve, causing the school to temporarily shut its doors in March 1862.
Another setback was the Sioux War of 1862, which forced the school closed for an additional two years. Despite these challenges, the pioneer batch of WSU successfully graduated in 1866, making a mark as the initiators of a long line of educated individuals transforming society.
Observing a rapid increase in enrollments, the school proudly introduced a lab for local children where WSU faculty members provided education. But the growing student body and expanded curriculum demanded more space than the initial four-room structure could accommodate. This led to local and state funding being channeled towards the construction of a full-fledged facility in 1869.
This new wave of expansion saw to the addition of two wings in the 'Old Main' building in 1894, the construction of Ogden Hall - a multipurpose library, gym, and kindergarten space in 1909. Following this development was the establishment of Morey Hall - the first women's dormitory in 1910, and Shepard Hall - another female dormitory in 1920.
In 1921, the institution transitioned from Winona State Normal School to Winona Teachers' College after receiving legislative authorization to confer a four-year Bachelor of Education degree. However, disaster struck in December 1922 when a devastating fire ravaged the Old Main building, leaving it in ruins during a term break.
The aftermath of the fire saw the town of Winona rallying to support their Normal School. Public buildings and churches opened their doors to host classes and administrative offices until a new main building, College Hall, was completed in 1924.
