History Winston - Salem State University

On the bright autumn date of September 28, 1892, an event of significance took place. That's when a fledgling institution, initially christened as Slater Industrial Academy, marked its humble start. It was an inconspicuous beginning with just 25 eager students and a single dedicated teacher, housed within the confines of a simple one-room structure. But, as they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Fast forward three years to 1895, and Slater Industrial Academy had succeeded in capturing the attention of the state of North Carolina. The state recognized the academy, lending it an aura of authenticity. By 1899, the academy had achieved another commendable feat. It secured a charter from the state, expanding its name to Slater Industrial and Slater Normal School.

The year 1925 saw the academy undergo another transformation. The North Carolina General Assembly, acknowledging the academy's growing reputation and contribution to education, renamed it the Winston-Salem Teachers College. This name change wasn't merely symbolic. The transformative moment also marked the ability of the college to award elementary teacher education degrees, a first-of-its-kind achievement by a black institution.

A significant milestone was reached in 1953 when the Winston-Salem Teachers College established the School of Nursing. New avenues opened up for aspiring nursing students with this move, as the college started offering baccalaureate degrees in the field.

A decade later, in 1963, the baton of progress was passed on to the North Carolina General Assembly again. The Legislature authorized another name change, this time rechristening the college as the Winston-Salem State College. The new name, though, wouldn't last long.

Come 1969, and another legislative approval was passed, this time transitioning the college into a university. Winston-Salem State College officially became Winston-Salem State University. The institution had come a long way indeed, from a one-room school to a university, proudly celebrated throughout the state.

Yet another defining moment was witnessed on July 1, 1972, when Winston-Salem State University entered the prestigious comity of 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina. The institution, which had started as a mere dream in the eyes of a few passionate visionaries, had now etched its name among the notable universities of the state.

Fast forward to 2020. A sizeable donation of $30 million was graciously given by MacKenzie Scott, making it the most substantial single gift in the university's history. Scott’s benevolence reaffirmed the university's unshakeable commitment to the cause of higher education.

From its inception in 1892, education at Winston-Salem State University has been a saga of perseverance and excellence. The legacy continues even today, bright as a North Star, guiding and inspiring countless scholars from all walks of life. Will you be part of its next chapter? This is a call to you, to all the young aspirants ready to blaze your trail in the world of knowledge.
